Bulgaria’s International Student Market Is Growing and Becoming More Diverse
19 August 2026

What the latest recruitment data reveals about Bulgarian students and why international institutions should be looking at Bulgaria now.

For international education providers, Bulgaria is a market with strong recruitment potential. The 2025 edition of the World Education Fair in Bulgaria attracted 3,673 registrations and 1,847 visitors from 44 cities, with 56% of registrants being new leads. Almost 90% of visitors were high-school students aged 14–19, while more than a third of registrants were parents, making the fair a direct meeting point with both students and the decision-makers influencing their international education choices. But the most interesting signal is not simply the size of the audience. It is how the Bulgarian audience is making its choices.

A Diversifying Market Means More Recruitment Opportunities
Bulgarian students are no longer considering just one or two traditional study destinations. The demand for established educational destinations such as Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Scandinavian institutions remains strong. Furthermore, recent enrollment data from summer and short-term programs shows families actively choosing destinations across the US, Asia, and the Middle East (including Japan, South Korea, and Dubai).
For universities, boarding schools and language and summer programme providers, this shift signals two major advantages:
  1. High Receptivity: Bulgarian families are open-minded and actively comparing new academic propositions. The audience is also becoming younger and more proactive, indicating that international study decisions are increasingly being explored earlier in the student journey.
  2. Multi-Level Demand: While Bachelor’s degrees represent 51% of visitor inquiries, over a third of candidates are seeking Master’s, postgraduate, and specialized career-oriented qualifications. Top fields include Business Management, Computer Science, Arts & Design, Medicine, Psychology, Architecture and Engineering.
For institutions already recruiting in Bulgaria, a broader and more diverse student market creates more opportunities to deepen and expand their reach. For new institutions, it offers an opportunity to enter a market where international education is already well established.

Why Bulgaria, and why now?
The data suggests a market that is both growing and becoming more sophisticated. Students are starting their search earlier. They are considering a broader range of destinations. They are asking about increasingly diverse academic fields and programme types. For institutions that have not yet made Bulgaria part of their international recruitment strategy, the opportunity may be even greater: to reach an audience that is already actively looking, but is still open to discovering what is next.
